GRAMMAR NOTE We use there is and there are when we first refer to the existence or presence of someone or something: There’s a letter on your desk. Your mum brought it from the mailroom. Not: It’s a letter on your desk . There are three cushions on my sofa. Not: They are three cushions on my sofa. There is and there’s are both singular forms. We use there’s in informal speaking EXAMPLES: There is a new mug in the cupboard. There´s an armchair in the living room. There are is the plural form of there is and there’s : There are two new towels next to the sink.
